My Approach

From the time I was a child, I have enjoyed solving puzzles, riddles, and equations. I liked buying broken electronics at yard sales and working diligently to figure out how they worked and, possibly, to fix them. So it won't come as a surprise to anyone to hear that I naturally enjoyed math and learning new concepts. However, it didn't take long for me to realize that most of my fellow classmates did not. After some time, I came to realize that my classmates didn't hate math just because it was math. They hated math because they didn't understand the way it was being taught to us. That has been my experience with most students who tell me they hate math. I knew from all the puzzles and broken things I had put together, that there are different ways to approach a problem and solve it successfully. That same outlook has inspired my teaching methodology. I have learned that different people solve problems in different ways. My job is to first understand the student, learn how his or her brain operates, and teach them on an individual basis that ensures they understand.
